Hidden in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this abandoned pit is connected to the strange Holy City roadside zoo that operated during the 1920s. Founded in 1919 by cult leader William E. Riker, Holy City became one of California’s strangest roadside attractions featuring monkeys, bears, and reportedly even lions along the old mountain highway to attract members to the cult.
